STL launches India’s first multicore fibre and cable
Created October 3, 2022STL has launched what it claims is India’s first multicore fibre and cable. Dubbed ‘Multiverse’, the company says the breakthrough will change the optical connectivity landscape of India.
Multiverse offers a number of features including increased capacity for 5G cell sites, meaning it will be possible to connect multiple radio heads through a single multicore fibre and reduce the cabling footprint for 5G networks. Also on the menu is quad-core fibre connectivity in data centres, raising the capacity of the most advanced fibre cables from around 7,000 cores to around 28,000 cores, thereby powering connectivity for warehouse-scale computing.
STL has also set its sights on quantum communication feasibility with Multiverse, although it only says that multicore fibre offers exciting possibilities in this emerging area, without going into further details. So far as sustainability is concerned however, STL says its new multicore cable is the greenest-ever optical fibre, reducing the cable surface area by around 75% and plastic in the ground by around 10%.
Speaking at the launch, Randeep Sekhon, CTO, Bharti Airtel, said: “I am excited to see this optical fibre innovation from a homegrown company. STL’s Multiverse fibre and cable will enable 4X capacity and play a vital role in 5G scale-up. I wish STL all the very best for their efforts towards supporting network build outs.”
Commenting on the launch, Dr Badri Gomatam, CTO, STL, said, “We have been doing deep research on optical fibre for over 15 years. In the last three years, we have been able to excel in Multicore technology and indigenously developed this product. We are proud to be the first in India to launch this. STL’s Multiverse will revolutionise 5G and data centre connectivity, actualise quantum computing at scale and make the internet greener.”
