A JV between Leoni, a German provider of energy and data management solutions in the automotive and other industries, and Chinese supplier of telecoms and energy cable and system solutions Hengtong Group, has started production of single-mode optical fibre in Jena, Thuringia. The j-fiber Hengtong GmbH JV is reported to possess the only German production plant able to manufacture single-mode fibre on an industrial scale.
The commissioning of the facility followed the installation of new 30-metre high drawing towers a few weeks previously. Single-mode fibre output from j-fiber Hengtong GmbH will be geared towards the telecommunications and data networking markets.
The JV owners note that the requirements for broadband networks will continue to rise in the future, due to new digital applications and changing usage habits. They say that broadband expansion in Germany and Europe therefore requires high-performance single-mode fibres as a key element of optical communication networks, and to support 5G mobile networks. The partners also referenced the “Thuringian fibre optic strategy”, a full-coverage fibre optic network that is to be created in the Free State of Thuringia by 2025.
The official inauguration of the new facility was attended by the managing directors of j-fiber Hengtong GmbH, Dr. Ulrich Lossen and Qiang Wang, together with Valentina Kerst, Thuringia’s State Secretary for Economic Affairs and the Digital Society, along with guests from politics and industry.
“In the past months our employees and many other people have given their best to keep the tight schedule,” commented Dr. Lossen. “I am proud that after only eight months of construction and rebuilding works, we can now give the start signal for single-mode fibres ‘Made in Germany’.”
“Optical fibres are the basis for Internet accesses with highest transmission rates and thus essential for the ongoing digitalisation of our society,” continued Kerst. “I am therefore particularly pleased that j-fiber Hengtong GmbH establishes itself as one of the leading manufacturers of single-mode fibres in Europe, with its new production facility being the only company in Germany to produce optical fibres on an industrial level.”
