According to a newly published report by Dell’Oro Group, the worldwide Broadband Access market, including PON, DSL and Cable, is expected to achieve revenues of almost $12 billion by 2019, with the PON market accounting for half of the total Broadband Access market revenues. “We expect continued growth from both the Cable and PON markets through 2019, while the DSL market will decline over this period.  Growth in the Cable market will be driven by DOCSIS 3.1 upgrades while strong demand for PON will continue to come from Service Providers in China.

In addition to China, we expect Service Providers in other countries to significantly increase their consumption of PON technology going forward,” said Alam Tamboli, Senior Analyst at Dell’Oro Group.  “Next-generation PON technologies are also expected to push demand, as TWDM-PON will likely be used for applications beyond residential broadband, including mobile backhaul and business services,” Tamboli continued.  “Vendors are working to address this first- to second-generation PON technology upgrade path via backwards-compatibility to ensure the PON infrastructure installed today will still be usable in the future,” he added.

The Access market is comprised of PON (ONT + OLT), DSL (Access Concentrator + CPE), and Cable (CMTS + CPE) technologies.  All of these technologies are analyzed in depth in the Dell’Oro Group Access 5-Year Forecast Report.
