The Market Focus Theatre at next month’s ECOC Exhibition will see a record number of speakers presenting, with executives from major operators like BT and Verizon heading up the schedule. The ECOC Exhibition will be held on September 23 to 25 at the ICC London ExCeL.
Sponsored by Oclaro, the Market Focus Forum will include 29 sessions over three days covering five main topic areas – mass market broadband, high-speed optical transmission, data centre networks, optical network agility and optical/photonic integration.
This year there is a definite buzz is around software-defined networking (SDN) in telecoms networks. Chris Bilton, BT’s director of research and technology, will take centre stage on Tuesday afternoon to consider whether the software telco is just a pipe dream. To what extent can operators use SDN and network functions virtualisation (NFV) to orchestrate operations across multiple types of network protocols, applications and equipment in their networks? Later that afternoon, Glen Wellbrock, the director in charge of Verizon’s optical network architecture, will provide a second operator perspective on when and where SDN can be applied to optical transport.
High-speed networking remains a hot topic, as always. Now that 100G is being deployed commercially, operators are looking seriously at what comes next to ensure that they can continue to scale their networks. Will it be 200G, 400G, 1Tbps, or even e) all of the above? Standards organisations the Ethernet Alliance and the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) will discuss industry trends, while systems vendors Tellabs and Fujitsu Network Communications, and components and module vendors such as ClariPhy and Acacia Communications will also present their view.
“This year we wanted the Market Focus to attract a variety of speakers to reflect the growing spectrum of the optical communications industry,” said Beverley Lucas, group event manager for Nexus Business Media Ltd, organisers of the ECOC exhibition. “We are thrilled to welcome back BT as an industry speaker and are excited to fit a whole lot more into the programme and announce a truly world class line-up of presentations.”
