Fiber Optic Centre (US) names Larry Donalds as Business Development manager

Fiber Optic Center, (FOC), an international distributor specializing in fibre optics, optics and speciality high-tech materials, has announced the appointment of Larry Donalds as its Business Development, Fibre Design and Manufacturing, Technical Sales manager.

Donalds brings more than 35 years’ experience from 3M Company, based in St. Paul, MN after he recently retired. During his time with 3M, he spent 24 years in the development and manufacture of specialty optical fibre, utilizing the “voice of the customer,” helping 3M design and produce fibres to meet specific customer applications and performance criteria.

His projects included the development and production of EDFA (Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifier) fibre, radiation-hardened fibre for gyroscopes, solution doping of preforms, patent development for Oxyfluoride Erbium fibre, organometallic rare earth deposition and a rare earth single mode fibre bend and position sensor.

In his position at 3M, Donalds maintained and operated MCVD equipment from SG Controls of Cambridge, UK, which FOC has represented in North America for over 25 years.

‘Speciality fibre world’

Larry has established himself in the speciality fibre world, as someone who is both creative and gets the job done. Donalds has also achieved several awards through his career including 3M Golden Step Award, Photonics Circle of Excellence Award, R&D 100 Award, 3M Circle of Technical Excellence Awards in 1983, 2001, and 2008, & 3M Ideation Challenge award in 2017.

After spending time with each of the members of FOC’s technical staff, including Wayne Kachmar, Donalds is expected to make a seamless transition into FOC’s daily technical focus and strategies. He will be working primarily from Arizona, US, when not visiting customer facilities or working in the FOC’s home office in New Bedford, MA.

He and his wife reside in Arizona. Outside of FOC, Larry’s hobbies includes fishing, boating, snowmobiling, outdoor landscaping, & deck design and construction.
