Viavi Solutions announced several initiatives to advance 100G, 400G and other high-speed optical network technologies at ECOC 2016. Network operators worldwide are facing unexpected demand for bandwidth and new services, and are responding by accelerating deployment of high-speed optical technologies from access to the core.
The drive to high-speed networks is evident worldwide. Viavi’s Gigabit Monitor has tracked a dramatic acceleration in gigabit internet to end users, with over 70 percent of worldwide deployments launched since the start of 2015. The company’s State of the Network study showed that enterprises are signaling a shift to 100 GbE, with one in four having implemented it, and two out of three planning to do so by 2017, based on bandwidth demands far outstripping expectations.
With one of the most comprehensive portfolios of solutions to test, measure and assure optical fiber networks, Viavi says it is meeting industry demand with new and enhanced lab, manufacturing, field, installation and service instruments.
Viavi’s 400G Optical Network Tester has been proven in lab testing of 100G components, and now has the industry’s first 400G support to include forward error correction (FEC) and PAM4 modulation. Pioneers of the high-speed network ecosystem now have a comprehensive, integrated platform for design, development and validation of 400G technologies including CFP8 pluggable 400G optics.
The OSA-710 is the industry’s first Optical Spectrum Analyzer that can perform in-band OSNR measurement on live, coherent systems utilizing polarization multiplexing (Pol-Mux) transmission formats, without shutting down the network or individual channels.
The MTS/T-BERD 5800 family introduces what Viavi calls “the industry’s smallest dual-port, multi-protocol 100G tester”. The MTS/T-BERD 5800-100G is also the first field tester that can test bit error rate (BER) on any line rate to 100G and characterize fiber with a single instrument.
At ECOC 2016, Viavi made joint demonstration with Inphi. Inphi demonstrated the capabilities of a 400G PAM4 PHY IC solution using Viavi’s 400G ONT. Using the comprehensive traffic generation capabilities of the 400G ONT coupled with its electrical adapter, it demonstrated 400G Ethernet traffic transmitted over optical fiber using Inphi’s PAM4 solution.
Viavi also made a joint demonstration with Finisar and Ixia. Viavi hosted a demonstration of interoperability between the 400G ONT and Ixia’s 400GbE test system, connected by Finisar CFP8 modules and fiber. Viavi’s applications in Layer 1-3 including module validation, physical layer, electrical adapters will be demonstrated in conjunction with Ixia’s in-depth Layer 2-4 and PCS/FEC test capabilities.
Following ECOC, Viavi is hosting a collaborative forum for industry leaders to present its perspectives on 400G: market requirements; state of the technology; and the path forward to standardization, which will enable interoperability and scalability.
